You NCIS
fans must be sick and tired of Rena Sofer news, but from the looks of things she’s not going anywhere – at least for the mean time.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Sofer’s Mr. Gibbs-calling feisty lawyer character will not only be making a return on Tuesday’s episode “Mother’s Day” she will be back for “multiple episodes” in May.
Is that the sound of groaning? It gets worse.
Adds NCIS executive producer Shane Brennan, M. Allison Hart will “set in motion a chain of events that forces Gibbs (Mark Harmon) to make a life-changing decision,” a decision which he adds “will impact every member of his team.”
This bit of information suspiciously sounds connected to the little hints that Brennan gave previously regarding the much-anticipated NCIS finale, where he said elements of which have already been included in past episodes this season.
He added then: “The audience has already seen some of the elements – we’ve already started the finale in a way. You won’t see it in every episode, but we’ll tease it out. It’ll be surprising, and this year it’s going to be controversial.”
Could it be a romantic decision for Gibbs, despite the apparent unpopularity of Sofer’s Attorney Hart?
NCIS
returns Tuesday with an episode where Gibbs’ former mother-in-law becomes a witness in a murder investigation.

Rena Sofer’s no-nonsense lawyer character, M. Allison Hart, has proved a thorn in Jethro Gibbs’ side – and at the same time a romantic fascination of his – twice already.
She resurfaces again in NCIS‘ March 2 episode (the show is off this week and next) and she’ll be back for at least one more after that, according to Entertainment Weekly.
As far as where the producers are taking her relationship with Mark Harmon’s Gibbs, don’t ask Rena. Not that she’d tell you if she did, but even she has no idea, by design.
Hart’s recurring status lends credence to the theory that her arc with Gibbs is part of the show’s big season finale, which producers have teased has already started in a sense.
“Mark doesn’t know either,” Sofer says of their relationship.
“We talk about it every time we do a scene together. We don’t know. Personally, I think it’s more fun to play the ambiguity. Once you go to bed with someone, it’s over. Where do you go from there? Part of me that hopes we never know for that reason.”
She’s alone in that department – fans can’t wait to see where it’s headed.
Interestingly, this isn’t Sofer’s only controversial romance of the season. She’s going on a date with Booth on Bones! Both Gibbs and Booth have good taste. Just saying.
We reported previously that three-time Emmy winner Gena Rowlands was cast to bring hell to Gibbs
(Mark Harmon) on NCIS
as one of his mothers-in-law. Rowlands is set to play “upscale” Joanna, who will bring not-so-pleasant memories to Gibbs’ very colorful love life sometime in March.
TV Guide reports that soap star Leann Hunley will piggyback on Rowlands’ role, as the Days of our Lives star was cast to play young Joanna in flashback set in the 1980s. Both will reportedly appear on NCIS‘ March 2 episode that will also – get this – feature Harmon’s own son Sean, playing a younger version of Gibbs.
The March 2 episode will shed light on why there is all these animosity between the two.
“You will see that Joann is very angry at Gibbs for taking her daughter and grandchild away from her when his job is relocated,” says Hunley, adding that the move even led to the murder of Gibbs’ family by a Mexican drug dealer.
Hunley, 54, adds that the NCIS guest spot is a dream role for her, adding that she often saw herself as “Rowlands type.”
”When I first saw her in the ’70s in A Woman Under the Influence, I thought, ‘That woman looks like me! She has my eyes!’” she says. “Ever since, it’s been my secret wish that I might play her some day. But, seriously, what were the chances?”

Gena Rowlands will soon be raising hell on NCIS as Joann, an ex mother-in-law of Mark Harmon’s Gibbs—and that’s good news for Days of Our Lives star Leann Hunley (Anna). The suds queen has been hired to play Joann in flashbacks set during the 1980s. Airing March 2, the retro scenes—which feature Harmon’s own son, Sean, as the younger Gibbs—will explain the bad blood between the two characters. “You see that Joann is very angry at Gibbs for taking her daughter and grandchild away from her when his job is relocated,” Hunley reports. That move led to the murder of Gibbs’ family by a Mexican drug dealer.
The guest-stint was a fantasy come true for the seductive, smoky-voiced Hunley, who has often been likened to Lauren Bacall but always saw herself as more of a Rowlands type. “When I first saw her back in the ’70s in A Woman Under the Influence, I thought, ‘That woman looks like me! She has my eyes!’” Hunley recalls. “Ever since, it’s been my secret little wish that I might play her some day. But, seriously, what were the chances? To have it actually happen is just wild!”
As the title suggests, what we witnessed going on for much of this episode was not reality, but a ‘Masquerade.’ If you pay attention to titles, you can have an edge figuring out what’s what. Meanwhile, beyond the action, there was more character interaction as ‘NCIS’ continues to weave a few mystery threads, including M. Allison Hart’s fascination with Mr. Gibbs.

That’s right. She calls him Mr. Gibbs. Even after Jethro reminded her that he’s a Special Agent, Hart continues to give him the dig by calling him mister. She also continues to challenge him, and with Rena Sofer in the role, the sparks are flying between her and Mark Harmon. However, Gibbs’ history with women suggests that he’s going to need to be wary with Hart. He’s already on edge because she has seemingly put herself in his cross hairs. The question is why … and can she be trusted?
Questions about Tony and Ziva and what really happened in Paris remain unanswered, which is terribly frustrating. However, Tony did broach the subject of Ziva’s experience in Somalia when she was a prisoner. She didn’t say much, but clearly she was traumatized by the event. She also put forth the theory that a group of terrorists may be a real threat or they might be defenders of their way of life.
That kind of political objectivity is unexpected in a drama series, but ‘NCIS’ seems to enjoy not fitting into any spot on the spectrum. The politics cropped up with the whole dirty bomb plot and the supposed terrorist group from Peru. Vance mentioned more than once that he was meeting with the Joint Chiefs and testifying before Congress about a defense appropriations bill, which was suspicious. All the leaked stories on the ZNN cable news channel was also a tip off that the fear of the bombs were more real than the actual devices. Or at least bombs that actually were properly formulated.
Colonel Bell seems to be the puppet master behind a lot of this business, don’t you think? Private military … defense contracts … terror threats to keep people fearful. Now, if it turns out that Hart has been working with Bell to get to Gibbs, that will be a bad thing … for M. Allison Hart. You don’t do that to Jethro.

Is American Idol
really on its way out? This early in the season, the ratings juggernaut is showing chinks in its previously infallible armor, as rival procedural NCIS is starting to gain ground against it.
While Idol still won the night on Tuesday last week, its Los Angeles audition episode was down 12 percent, resulting to 24.2 million viewers. NCIS, meanwhile, while also slightly down, reeled in 20.2 mil, resulting in the closest margin yet between the two shows.
In fact, NCIS appears to have more promise in terms of growth, as the Mark Harmon-led series registered a 12 percent jump in viewers (16 percent in the all-important 18-49 demo), while the soon-to-be-Cowell-less
Idol managed a teeny 3 percent increase in viewers (4 percent in the same demo).
It’s important to note that numbers for NCIS continue to rise, something unprecedented for a series that is on its seventh season.
A word of caution to die-hard NCIS fans, however, since Idol numbers are known to swell once the top 12 is determined and the competition progresses to themed weeks. So no celebrating just yet, CBS. But nevertheless, good job.
